The OUT banjo bolt on my other 1.6 IDI powered vw ended up being completely plugged up so I swapped out the bolt to a bolt without the mesh screen. I know the plugged banjo bolt was the issue because the car would idle poorly and die under acceleration and there was no fuel at all coming out of the return line. The question is how important is it to have the mesh filter banjo bolt versus just running with a regular non filter banjo bolt?

The important part is the tiny orifice in a proper OUT bolt. The pump won't make any internal pressure without the return restriction which in turn will disabke the dynamic advance mechanism.

sgtlord, I believe that the screen is there to keep the orifice from getting plugged easily. It will also catch anything and keep it out of the fuel tank. With out the screen you only need to get a tiny bit of something pushed in there and you will loose that opening. So clean the screen you have and reattach to the car.
If the tiny orifice gets plugged the internal IP pressure goes up and then the dynamic advance starts moving up. Pretty soon you would be driving at full advance, idling at full advance and you would probably notice an increase in idle RPM as that happens. Performance would be poor as well.

Not only will a plugged OUT bolt peg the dynamic advance, it can kill the IP by overheating. The IP needs fresh fuel circulating through it to keep cool.
