My 1995 Golf has an adjustable injection pump sprocket......the one with the little square notch / 6mm round hole in pump housing, and the three bolts that hold the sprocket to the pump.
I want to set the timing. I have read that you just set the crank to TDC, the cam lobes "up", the timing marks on the flywheel to TDC, and then loosen / rotate the pump sprocket until the notch aligns up with the round hole, no dial gauge measurement or adjustment needed......done.
Well, exactly what number will the time be at? .085? I want it to be set at 1.0mm, as this engine has 200k on it.
Can I still use a dial gauge and set the timing to 1.0mm like I have done with other aaz's that have the round inj pump pulley holes to line up?
This car has sat for 2 years, will only idle with the cold start fully pulled out, idles very rough, much smoke, but when the engine revs are increased to say 2000, then it smooths out.
Plan is to check / set timing, new fuel filter, run a can of diesel purge and see how it goes from there.
