time to choose a turbo for the build!
« on: December 09, 2016, 07:23:04 pm »
I Have the cylinder head back and have all the information so know I can make an informed decision on the Turbo.  it originally came with a KKK 14 so now I think my choices are between the he221w and the hx30.  So those of you with great knowledge of the turbo upgrades let me know what you think. (alcaid, Theman53, Gizmo and others)

You can view the build at the vortex  vwvortex.com/showthread.php?7067437-Complete-85-jetta-restoration-build   but all that is really important for the engine is the last couple pages and the info here.

85 1.6 TD block with squirters
.040 oversize
completely balanced bottom end (+/- 1g reciprocating and rotating weight)
ARP main studs
ARP rod bolts
.88mm deck height, I installed a 3 notch to help lower the compression ratio

completely ported, (to be port matched) and polished head
34mm exh. valves, 6mm valve stems
37mm intake valves,6mm valve stems
3.5 cc chambers
stock cam
upgraded from 48lb stock valve springs to 90lb

I had hoped to drop the compression ratio to 18.5 to 1 but did not quite get to that, as I know that the more boost I want to run the better it is to have lower comp but still retain startup capability, I Live in a Charlotte, NC suburb (warmer climate) and its not going to be a daily but it should start with the block heater anyway.

flow numbers to follow

If you can find the he221w with the 5cm exhaust like I have I would run it. I like that turbo. The newer design is the he200wg, it is real similar from what I have read and I would be happy with one of those. The hx30 exhaust housing is a bit big. It may work for you but it may not spool right away. If Alcaid gets on he has all the numbers accurately but when I looked a year or two ago I think the hx30 has a 9cm exhaust housing...that would not spool well on our cars I don't think.

Like theman53, HX30 is way to big for 1.6TD, it will begin spooling at high RPMs.

He221 is a good one but with the 5cm housing, big he221 are slower to spool.

I personally have a HE200WG on my 1.9 mTDI, the build is in progress, but the flow the turbo has in neutral is very impressive compared to my old K24, and seems to spool very fast.
If I can remember, Alcaid made 204WHP on a 1.6 TD with the HE200WG.

Here is my thread, you could see what it looks like:

The HX30W has a 6cm turbine housing and a turbine choke flow close to the HE221W-7cm. Both will not work on a 1.6/1.9TD unless crazy lag and smoking like a freight train with excessive EGT is the goal for the build. Even with good flowing big-valve heads, we have tried...

HE221W-5cm that is mentioned in this  thread is an early version of what is now the HE200WG-5cm, indeed it did 204whp on a 1.6TD. It is the perfect fast spooling - high HP compromise turbo for these engines! With room to grow if you add on a bigger turbo at a later stage for a compound setup like I am running ;)

There is a new version of the HE200WG-5cm available now with a T3 flange and wastegate actuator mounted to the turbine housing. Re-clocking the turbo is now a no brainer as you don't have to make a new bracket for the wastegate actuator. T3 manifolds are also easier to get hold of. Win-win.

Yup, that's mine! Ahah Alcaid, you mentionned it has a T3 flange!

Someone helped me identifying that the info I had from Holset earlier regarding flange on this one was wrong ;) T25 on all other HE211W, HE200WG and HE221W except this one that is T3

You're welcome! :) That wasn't a problem but it's a little bit ennoying when you purchase a T25 manifold!

But I agree with you, the HE200WG is THE turbo for 1.6TD to 1.9TDI.

Great looking build!  I agree that HE200WG is a great turbo for this type engine.  Is this going into a daily driver?

Steve.

More of a fair weather daily but is definitely going to accrue some mileage!
