Turbo Diesel Vanagon Help on the East Coast
« on: December 06, 2016, 10:14:37 am »
Hey there everyone! We've been building out our Syncro over the last year to get it ready for some long term overlanding. We’re reaching out to the community to ask about any resources you know of in the southeast US.

After some long discussions with members in the community, we decided to install a 1.9L TDi PD BEW. The process of getting the engine and getting it installed was a very long and frustrating one. It was finished mid-August and has never run as advertised. We are looking for a shop in the southeast that can assist us in dialing in our set up. They don’t necessarily need to be an expert on Vanagons but they do need to be an expert on turbo diesels and preferably have experience in dealing with custom overloading rigs.

Issues:
- 20-23 mpg max after break in period if we never go above 55mph, we should be getting 27-30+mpg with this set up
- Boost at cruising speed is is between 11psi and 13psi. It doesn't boost above 19psi and at 3800rpms it seems to lose boost. Our N75 pressure control valve failed a few days back. Second time it has failed since leaving the shop.
- Rough idle. Every now and again we get code 19463 (cam shaft position sensor). We've check the sensor, unplugged it, cleaned it etc and the code disappears. The van still runs rough.
- Our tune is from Kerma TDi. When we start the van she takes an uncomfortably long time to crank up, whether it's hot or cold outside doesn't matter. When first cranked, when we first start going the power falls off a cliff until two mashes on the throttle and then it seems the computer program kicks in (these are two issues we've had since it left the installer. We informed the installer about it and no solutions were forthcoming).

If you know of any resources, PM us or leave a comment below. Thanks!!

If you didnt change any of the gear ratios those mileage numbers seem accurate. Not sure about the rough running.

As for your rough running- have you ever taken the valve cover off and inspected the cam and injector rockers? Those engines are notorious for having premature camshaft wear.
