As stated in previous topic - I am thinking of buy an 88 Cabriolet that has had an AAZ swapped in for the 1.8L gas - trans remains original - this car runs well but is mostly suited for in town driving - I have an extra CTN trans that came out of 98 Jetta TDI - it of course has very tall gearing compared to the original trans - if I swap out the transmissions  (S & P has a manual to hydraulic conversion clutch kit for fitting Mk3 and Mk4 trans into Mk1) will the turbo-ed AAZ have enough power to pull the CTN through its gears without bogging down?

It'd probably work pretty well. I honestly wish my AAZ had taller gears most of the time.

If I remember correctly you are using the Mk1 diesel trans FF or FN - does it have the .71 final?

i have a 4 speed with the .71 final drive, it kind of sucks honestly, 1st is too short just spins tires, second is actually good, then third is a big jump from second, so its too tall.  4th is ok but it could be taller for highway cruising.

How fast do you drive?  I drove a b3 AAZ with a ctn and below 120 4th was fine. If you're into shifting for every hill you'd be fine driving slower. I drove it with a t3 and a k14.

Personally I'd look for the 02a that came stock in the b3 with the 02a. That's the perfect trans IMO.

I have that trans and I'd prefer something steeper around here. Washington state I5 has me buzzing along above 3500, not exactly ideal for economy. More like 2800 at 65 mph would be ideal.

Tyler - you mentioned you have used T3 nd K14 with AAZ - which turbo suited you best? Am wondering if the K03/04 Hybrid that they make for the AHU would work well with AAZ? If thats a good choice where is a good place to purchase?

from what i have heard, i wouldn't waste my money on a k03/k04, id either go with a good stock used turbo like a k03, k14, k24, or t3 to save money, or if you want to really upgrade go to an he200wg

Is there a specific one to get for either 1.6TD and 1.9TD or 1.9TDI AHU AND ALH? Looks like there are many HE200wgs and I will need to be specific in choosing?

Sorry for the late reply. I preferred the K14 because it had smooth power delivery. Giles preferred the T3 because you'd be puttering along and then the boost would hit and away you'd go. It was his car. He had a pump, intercooler, P&P head and probably some other mods.
