I have a beck arnley wheel cylinder that I bought some years ago back when I knew far less about my vw mk2. Has anyone had any experience with these cheapo wheel cylinders?

Use it, They aren't all that bad. I have plenty of BA parts on my cars and only once had a problem and they took it back without question.
