Old topic - !.9 TDI head on a 1.6 idi engine
« on: December 23, 2015, 12:26:57 am »
This is a topic that I see was discussed years ago but I couldn't find the info I was specifically interested in. So....
1) assuming somebody was able to find a cheap source for four of the 1.2TDI pistons and rings from a late model VW polo, are the piston pin diameter, piston pin location, piston diameter, etc. the same as to be a slip in to an early model NA 1.6 diesel block with 1.6 rods?
2) are there distinct differences between the NA 1.6 block and the 1.6 TD block, rods, crank, oiling, etc.?
I love the idea of putting together a 1.6 mTDI engine which could deliver the most power and ECONOMY from a smaller displacement engine.
Seems such a frankenmotor could easily deliver 75 hp and return 60-70mpg in a 2,000 pound car.

If it doesn't fit force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

There really isn't the displacement penalty you see in gas engines.  A 1.6TDI would return virtually the same fuel economy as a 1.9TDI that has its fueling detuned to the same max power as the 1.6TDI.  The main differences are that the 1.6TDI would be more expensive, harder to source parts for, and lack the potential for more power.
