Beaten Jetta after Mini Stock race needs help...
« on: September 15, 2015, 06:15:33 pm »
1985 Jetta Turbo Diesel did very well against all the gas racers. Started in last place, 8th and finished 3rd in first heat.

After the day was done, both drivers struts are bent. Rear axle bent. Drivers spindle bent {Maybe} . Broken Diver CV joint.

Is there a stronger CV joint we can swap in ?

We were also have issues with the shifter. all bushing look good but it stalled a few times in 3rd when we were going for 1st.

We are thinking about swapping it over to an Auto... is there a Diesel Auto and is it an easy swap ?

New original VW CV joints are pretty tough.  Parts store replacement ones are usually pretty terrible.  I'd take a used factory axle over a parts store one any day.  That said there are a few sources of performance axles out there, but I'd be very surprised if you needed them.

There's no real good options for an auto; gearing would be pretty horrible.  The slop can definitely be taken out of the shifter though - probably part of it is your engine mounts, if the engine/trans are moving around much the 020 shifter setup moves with it causing unreliable shifting.  Check out MissingLinkz for an 020 linkage upgrade: http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkageInstall.shtml

If you're planning on beating on the trans a lot though, and planning on cranking up the power an 02A swap might be a better option.  It's a bit of work but they're a much stronger transmission (though still a 5 speed manual)
