AAZ or 1Y. can't figure which I have
« on: August 07, 2015, 11:53:42 pm »
From my understanding
3 head bolts so could be aaz. 1y?
No turbo (air box looks like a 1.6l and takes same filter). 1y. Aaz without turbo?
engine came from canada. Aaz. 1y?

028 part numbers

Any thing I should look for?
I need to do my timing belt and I ordered Bentley for aaz.

Check the engine code.  Flat area on the block at top/left of oil filter flange.

Neither AAZ nor 1Y airbox looks like the 1.6 airbox.

When you say "3 head bolts" you must mean valve cover nuts.  All the 1.9 engines have 10 head bolts and you can't see any of them without removing the valve cover.

Yeah must be valve cover bolts :/

Doesn't look like it has numbers there though it is rusted.
There is a capped off nipple next to the oil filter arm.

And there is a Barcode sticker on the block.

Alternator doesn't Mount like a 1.6

Is the oil return bung on the back of the block threaded (presumably with a plug in it if it is)?

Hey. Sorry late response and thanks for the reply. Only thing coming off back of block or head is exhaust and air filter box.

I did see this

Behind cylinder #2 there is a boss cast into the block. If it's drilled and tapped with a plug in it it's probably an AAZ. If it's not, it's definitely not an AAZ.

Where the oil drain goes in...

See the deck surface, the one with the piston holes. If you count the piston holes from left to right 1,2,3,4, right in between 3,4 is a shiny spot just like the deck surface that continues at least 1/2 way down the block. The rest of the block pictured is black. The shiny spot in between 3,4 will have an engine code. If it is rusty take some rust breaking spray and a rag or wire brush, not sandpaper. There you will find your code.
