You probably could with a tdi but IDI engines are all mechanical and dont have computer controls.

the answer is definitely NO unless they make a diesel specific one.

Megasquirt could probably be adapted to a VE pump - I mean there's a standalone arduino-based controller for the VE already. Really there's no reason why not, it'd just take a lot of engineering and understanding of how things work. A common rail diesel isn't that different from a gasoline one as far as the injection control system is concerned - more precise timing and a much shorter injection duration...

The latest MS has CANbus control for HE351VE, which would put it similar price and way more versatile than any other controller I've seen, for my Dodge at least.
I have 2 of them, but I don't know if the 2.5 IDI in my Volvo would spool such a beast. I did look at it enough to determine that the hood could be made to close.

i really don't see how it would be possible to use megasquirt on a diesel since the fuel delivery is completely different. if you are putting a diesel in a beetle just use a mechanical pump or do an electronic swap, it would actually be less work to go electronic than use megasquirt if it even would work.

It wouldn't be worth the time in my opinion. Just do a mechanical pump and it would save a lot of headaches. Or do what I did and install a turbocharged ej20 Subaru and crank up the boost and beat 99.99% of the cars u see on the road hahahahah

If you want to put a diesel in an air-cooled Beetle, simplest way is to get an adapter plate and run a mechanical IDI diesel. No computers, no muss, no fuss.
