Air burping back from Mtdi pump.
« on: August 23, 2015, 05:19:18 am »
I figure the Mtdi pumps are more similar to the IDI pumps, hence posting it here.
The pump in question is the euro land rover pump, i put on my TDI conversion. I was just going off the ebay sellers word that it is a good pump.  I timed the pump internally, then then, timed the belt and pulley the traditional way. I've purged the system several ways, opening the injector bungs, pulling vacuum on the return line (for days) I even installed an inline elec. pump. Last thing I did was crack all the bungs, remove the glow plugs and cranked the crap out of it, waisting a bunch of fuel but I'm desperate.  No matter what I do, bubbles come back out of the injector pump back into the feed line.  Ive only got it to chug to life a couple times for a couple seconds.  So is it a bad pump? Is there a way to check?

The mTDI forum might be more a more appropriate location for this thread.

What you describe regarding air is normal.  You will not purge all the air out without running the engine at decent rpms for some time.  If it is installed correctly, timed correctly and adjusted correctly it will start/run with a bit of air in the system and then running it will purge the air.

Ahh, I forgot there was a specific forum for Mtdi.  But in regards to what you said. Would it take that long to get the fuel through? I would think with all the measures I took, it should be properly primed. I mean, doesnt VW just say to crank it and it should eventually start. I've actually pull started this thing with no results.   As I said, with the injector lines loosened and glow plugs out, fuel is squirting everywhere, but one I button everything up, it runs for a couple seconds then starves.

With an inline pump, I don't think air will be your issue. Sounds like timing or perhaps a faulty stop solenoid or wiring.

What are the numbers on the pump?

What color is the smoke when you are trying to get it running?

What is it timed to?

You have an additional pump and the fuel is still going back toward the tank when you shut it off?
How fast does it get pulled back after shutdown? Rapidly or a slow syphen back toward the tank?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it is common to bottle-feed-test first in these air infiltration issues.
