1.6L NA Knock
« on: August 04, 2015, 01:28:14 am »
Hey Guys,

I recently got my 1.6L NA Caddy back together after a head gasket replacement and the engine knocks pretty bad when rev'ed. I would post a video but apparently I am not allowed... haha. I bought the truck a few months back not running and finally got to start it today only to find the knock. I would guess that the knock kicks in around 2000 RPM.  Any ideas? Rod bearing? Injector?

Your guy's help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you done anything to diagnose it? Anything, at all? Any idea where it is coming from, bottom, top, head, crank, injectors? Did you time it? If so, do you know how to?

Give us something other than it knocks. It could be a total failure, or it could be you have no idea what a diesel sounds like running, so we need more.

Bought the truck with the head removed. Previous owner blew a head gasket and decided he was in over his head and wanted to get rid of it. I replaced the gasket, timed the engine (Crank, flywheel, cam, and IP is spot on TDC), and checked the pump timing (0.93). Head seemed to to be in good condition, there were some small cracks between the valves for each cylinder, but when I did a compression test it held pressure well. Each cylinder read about 320 PSI on a cold engine.

Starts and idles well, but if you give any throttle it forms a real apparent knock at around 2000 RPM. I have no idea the condition of the injectors, nor do I know what a injector knock sounds like.

If only I could post this link... haha.

The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

a knock that goes away is usually not a bearing knock, it would still be present at idle. You didn't say where the knock is coming from. I would isolate that and see. If it is the top I would look at injectors first and then listen to the head and see if the "good" head had bent valves. Many things to consider, could be as simple as air in the fuel still. Timing and compression seem low but that won't give a knock. I would also see if you are still in time

Had the injectors pop tested at the local Bosch service center. Injector 3 had a stuck nozzle. Ordered new injectors, I'm hoping this is the source of the knock.

Any updates? I'm in the same situation with mine I think. Just curious what happened with yours.

Run down the road and shut the engine off in gear. If the sound stops it's an injector.

Now open them one at a time to see which one is making the noise.
