I have a AZZ that has decent compression, and cranks, but won't start (it was running). The glow plugs are working. Could the timing slip one belt notch & so that the engine won't run, without being so far off that valves are slamming into the pistons? :?:
pretty sure even 1 tooth will slap valves... does it turn over by hand if you put a socket on the crank?
Yes, I can turn it over by hand.
what has changed since it started last?
is it getting fuel?
do you have 12v to the stop solenoid?
I have had a timing belt drive sprocket/pulley come loose and break it's key while driving home. It continued to loose power (smoking) untill it quit leaving me on the side of the road. Talking to a couple of shops they said all the valves were bent and I should go look for another motor.
Being stuborn I put another (used) pulley and bolt in with a new belt, retiming it as well. I was lucky it ran for another 120K
This was a 1.6NA jetta
you may be lucky
