my oil pump died
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:04:10 am »
dang, on my way to work this morning and my oil pump died. At least that better be what died as the motor ran fine just started to make some noise then 3 miles down the road got really clakity and I shut it off, checked oil  had good amount started it sounded almost ok at idle gave it a quick blip and it got clackity with rpms so I shut it off and waited for the tow truck now I am going to steal a oil pump from one of my extra motors I just picked up last weekend as the local places can't get a pump till monday.

Did the oil pressure light come ? or the buzzer ?

VW has a good warning system, and the light should start flashing before you lose oil pressure and it gets too loud.

First thing I would do is check the oil pressure with a gauge.

no flashing light, I just changed the oil pump with a known good one and it sounds okay at idle but as soon as I rev it up above 1.5k it is a very loud tapping noise

this sucks

You must have something else wrong. If the oil pump is bad,and the motor is noisy, then you should have a low oil pressure light on (if it works).

I would still check oil pressure, maybe you have a plugged filter,or the oil is so old it's breaking down in this warmer weather ?

I assume this is a solid lifter motor ? Maybe a lifter or adjustment disc ? Worn cam lobe ?

I'd start by pulling the rocker cover and running it to see if you can isolate it.

If the noise is more towards the bottom end, then you can crack the injector lines loose one at a time to determine which cylinder it is.Maybe a rod bearing, broken piston,or wrist pin ?

main crank bearings, I saw a bronze/copper flake in the old oil pan... I drove it down the alley and it started to get really loud. nice rod knocking noise now

crap!

I can't just throw some bearings on the motor can I? I only need to drive like 5k more on this motor before I can afford to get a remanufactored one.

It's most likely a rod bearing.I've never seen a main bearing fail on one of these, unless it was taken out by something else (bad oil pump, etc).

Rod bearings are cheap and easy to do.You can polish up the crank journals with some fine emery cloth, and it should easily go 5000 if the crank isn't too far gone,or the rods are out of round.Eihter way, thats the only way your going to keep it going. If you drive it the way it is,your going to destroy it.Not only will you now be forced to go rebuilt, you also be out the core charge (can be pretty high in some places),if the motor blows up.Could be even worse if the rod lets go,punches a hole in the block, and the piston goes up and drives a valve deep into the head. Now you have a nice boat anchor.

Better off to do a decent fix now,and then you'll have a good core,or a motor you can sell off if you decide to drop in a different motor.

If you managed to do the pump yourself, you should be able to do the rod bearings.

lol I meant rod bearings, can I do the bearings without pulling the head or screwing with the timing? if so I am off to the parts store to order a set, except I wouldn't know what size to get std, .25mm+ or 50mm+

Just drop the pan, unbolt the rod caps (do one at a time),and push the rod up slightly to get the upper half out.

You should really pull one to see what size they are (should be marked or have part number to cross ref),but they will most likely be standard).

Mark the caps so they go back on the same rod,in the same direction.

It also helps if you can let the motor sit overnight,so all the oil drains into the pan, makes it easier than fighting the drips if the motor has just been running.

was a rod bearing, the passenger side one to be exact.
does that mean anything?
the other 3 seemed fine (no play when shoved around by me) I polished the crank as best as I could cleaned it up slapped new bearings in torqued to 1lb beyond spec and car is very quite now. I had some knocking for alittle bit. will post pics of bearings soon.

wooo now I have a lead on a ecodiesel motor that I am going to pick up soon and swap in but for now the jetta purs.
