Thoughts on this "bolt on" tdi turbo setup?
« on: March 26, 2015, 01:11:00 pm »
This guy claims that it's a garrett turbo off a mkiv tdi setup and what you see is what you get.  Obviously it's missing the intercooler and oil lines but not sure what else.

The exhaust manifold has a block off plate for an external wastegate but it looks like they basically ground a hole in the side of it.

Seller Notes:    “used as is no warrantee see photos. turbo has very little play and spins with no problems. exhaust downpipe is welded, not manufactured. some pipes have sharp edges because they were cut. exhaust manifold has a flange where a grinder was used for firewall clearance and another bolt was tapped into it.”

Think it's still work the asking price? I just wish I knew more about the setup. I'm only looking for a small boost of highway power since getting up hills is almost impossible in 4th.

And I already have a Giles pump, so a little extra fuel isn't a problem.

What are you planning on putting it on?

A Mark 4 turbo will be a VNT which needs some sort of control mechanism.

I don't trust anyone who isn't smart enough to know that putting an egt gauge in the EGR block off plate is not going to get it into the exhaust stream. So the as is no warranty is a killer for me from guys like that.

You could fix the vanes in one position and run it like that. Obviously there would be a performance sacrifice since you'd have to worry about overboost.

Re: longer EGT probes, Westach in Calif have 5" long "k-type" probes and a variety of single, dual, etc. gauges.   I have this turbo on a 1.6td installed in a Mk1 Jetta.

I have a frozenboost AWIC as well.
