Injection pump bracket
« on: March 18, 2015, 02:49:49 pm »
I have a 1.6 TD motor and I think the injection pump bracket is bent/broken as the cam belt runs to the left.

I have a 1.9 TDI (ahu) engine for spares, would the injection pump bracket off the TDI motor fit the 1.6? Or would I have to get one from a 1.6/1.9 TD?

No it will not fit.

The belt tracking is adjusted fairly easily and EVERY time the pump bracket is removed you need to adjust the tracking.  If you have not yet tried to adjust the tracking correctly, how do you know the current issue is not caused by improper adjustment?  After swapping the bracket you will need to adjust the tracking anyway, you might want to give it a try first.

There are two parts to the 1.6 bracket.  One part is bolted to the block behind the injection pump and is usually easier to move that the piece that is bolted to the end of the block.  Occasionally I've needed to adjust both parts, but usually the adjustment can be done with just the piece behind the pump.  To get the belt to track closer to the block you need to loosen the two bolts that hold that part to the block and the two bolts that hold that part to the other bracket piece and move it UP toward the head or vice versa if you need to adjust the other way.  Tighten the bolts, bolt the pump in, install the belt and rotate the engine by hand through several rotations until the belt position does not change.  If it needs further adjustment then you will need to adjust the front plate.  After all the bolts of the front plate are loosened move it DOWN to track closer to the engine or vice versa...

You will need to remove the injection pump to access the bracket bolts that are behind it.  The adjustment of the pump bracket can change the timing slightly so it would be a good idea to check it once the belt is tracking correctly.

Thanks Andrew for sharing this info.
I remember hearing this method from you first,.. many years ago. Saved me much confusion through the years.

I don't thin you have to remove the whole pump to get to the 2 bolts behind it.
I got away with not having to remove the sprocket by removing all 4 bolts and the injector lines. That let me pull it away far enough to get to those bolts.
You don't have  to put the injector lines back on to test it, just turn it all by hand.
There is one bolt you can get to with the pump on. When it is set right; use blue lock-tite on that bolt, then pull the pump away again and blue lock-tite the other one.
