Golf mk3 1.8i to 1.9d swap, instrument cluster issues.
« on: March 15, 2015, 07:30:04 am »
Hi folks.

I have converted a mk3 to a diesel 1.9d non turbo. I have used the engine, gearbox, instrument cluster, cluster loom and engine bay loom from the diesel car. Everything works except the Rev counter, coolant temp and the oil pressure light is flashing (all were working before in the donor car).
I have checked to see if it has oil pressure and it does. I have cleaned the sender unit terminal and checked the condition of the wiring and it all looks good.
Not really sure where to start with the Rev counter or temp gauge.
Any advice welcome.

Regards BP

The oil pressure light will flash if the tach isn't receiving a signal, so those two problems are likely the same issue.

I think you're saying you have a 1Y (cousin of the AAZ) engine. If do the tach signal comes from the 'W' terminal on the alternator. Not sure exactly how it routes to the cluster though.

Cheers Van
The 2 pin plug on the alternator had 2 spade connectors in it, they were both rotten with blue corrosion. Took a plug from the petrol loom and rewired it. Now working and oil pressure lamp goes off once running.
Ashamed to admit that the temp gauge now works too, just hadnt left it running for long enough lol.
Thanks for the help, Regards BP.
