Installed my new springs and bilstein shocks on my mk2. Then drove a bit to test them. I must say that ride quality is much firmer now.

Discovered that my B3 has an AAZ specific radiator - it's a unique size used only by the AAZ meaning the fan shroud is also AAZ specific. I've had some overheating issues with my AAZ on long extended grades (basically have to drive it by the temperature gauge) so I want a new one for my AHU swap. The TDI doesn't put as much heat in to the cooling system as the IDIs do, but 20+ year old radiators on a stock car that gets too hot are probably clogged up.

Happily when I visited my favorite source for VW OEM parts (VM Autohaus) it turns out they actually have one of those radiators in stock - OEM VW. That'll do eh?

Yanked the engine from my Jetta finally, then called the scrapper to haul away the carcass... Been a long journey - this is the car that caused me to sign up on this very forum!

She carried me 100,000 km, pretty much all driving for fun. Lots of road trips, lots of adventures. So long and farewell!

Today I checked on the results and success of smearing a whole lot of Bag Balm on the wing window seals.  It rained about 1.2 inches overnight and I figured that would be a fair test to see if that stopped the leaking.  Or at least slow down the beast.

I have been battling this wing window problem for a while and thought I had it just about cured.  But with the relentless rain this year, yeah 150% for the year already, and forecast for more tonight.  So I thought I would just bite the cost and get some new ones.  Well I only found one place online that has the seals for opening windows and I really choke on 200 for the pair.  I was in the poke around mode for home spun remedies and I found one in a general sense when it comes to restoring rubber flexibility.

The suggestion was to put petroleum jelly on them, you know Vaseline, do it repeatedly over the course of a month and the rubber swells back up.  I thought what do I have to loose?  Other than making my VW smell like down on the farm.  I had really dry, brittle seals to the point that they almost felt like cloth.  I put one good coat on the seals, inside and out.

I must say I was impressed.  Water was beading up this morning on them and they actually felt and looked like rubber.  And the best part was that the leak that would send a pool of water to the inside of the car?  There were a few drops, not even enough to drip down to the carpet by rolling down the door.

Not sure if the car smells like a cows udder but that might go away in time.  I will get a second coat on these come the weekend and hope to see even better looking seals after that.  I might run around the whole car, I have a fair sized can of the Bag Balm.

Just another tip for those trying to keep the old car looking new.  I wonder how it works on tires?

10-20 bux... or a few cents in plastic...

Download stl file to make your own: https://dl.dropbox.com/s/n83snkug952cgzt/retaining%20ring2%20v6.stl
(If you prefer to buy the MK2-MK3 OEM: P/N 165941621)

And there was that film on the inside of the headlamps...

Before:

After a rinse with a couple ounces of glass cleaner:

Still a bit of buckshot on the outside, but miles better than before.

I opened the drivers door of the Caddy only to notice a new puddle of water down next to the accel pedal.  Dang it, Got a leak and that 2.7 inches of rain we just had found a way in the cab.  I think I sourced it to a poor seal on the door plastic.  Will have to wait a couple days, and another 2 inches of rain to be able to fix it.
The sun will shine and dry it out on the door.  Will need a shop vac on the floor.

Swapped to the winter tires on the MK2 to see if the terrible steering wheel shake on the highway would go away. Checked the rear polo bearings for problems . No issues yet :) The tires were indeed out of balance and causing issues. No more shake on the highway.

sgtlrd, I had a weight come off one of the front rims one time and it drove me nuts trying to figure out the shake.  One good reason to keep a spare set of tires around.  I put the winter ones on and like you, no more shimmy shake.

Today I figured out that the vac hose to the booster was cracked so I fixed it so it holds a vacuum.  Now I might actually have power brakes again.

I bumped my accel lever two notches CCW to the shaft.  Needed to use the index mark on the shaft so cleaning needed first.  I was running with my foot to the floor at 60 and couldn't figure out why I didn't have more travel.  I read on another post to get idle and top end correct you need to adjust the lever position as well as the fuel screw and idle stop.

Now I have power to spare.  Well, in a 1.6 enough to climb the long extended hills with out being passed doing 45 -50 now.

I replaced the 4 year old Walmart battery after -10 Fahrenheit temperatures killed it. Also switched to synthetic 5w-40 so I can start the damn thing when it drops to the negatives.

Strut mount replacement before it snows in a few days. Amazingly the Febi mount lasted over 100,000 miles.

Changed the car battery today. It actually died on me yesterday. No surprise though, I haven't done this in years.
