Hey there! :)
I recently acquired a 1984 diesel VW Rabbit Diesel L
This is my first diesel automobile, and i'm having a hard time identifying the engine.

the code on the engine block is "068 103 373 f-2br brazil vw 14"

It has VW stamped on the engine, but i'm wondering if this engine is not original with the car, as I got it from an engineer who loved to tinker around with cars and planes.

Tinkering, That is the part number for the head that you are seeing.  Crawl under the oil pan with your head towards the passenger side front wheel.  Take a bright light.  Shine it up from underneath on the back side of the block.  You should see 1.6 D if it is a NA diesel with a standard block.

Welcome to the club.
