Gasser intake on my 1.6D? Worth it?
« on: February 12, 2015, 06:36:13 pm »
I just bought an 81 gasser parts car and I remembered reading somewhere about using a gasser intake on my diesel for better top end power and hopefully colder air w/ a cone.

This is the intake I'd like to use.

Thoughts?

For a turbo car, yes it isn't bad, but not for an NA car. IIRC you might need the turbo low mounted to run the gasser intake.

Interesting. I thought I remember reading somewhere that it was still a  worth while mod. I'm trying to find that thread.

The NA intake is actually pretty good, it has nice long runners and everything. There isn't any gain to using the gasser intake. The turbo intake on the other hand is pretty poor.

the problem with the na intake is the tiny snorkel, if you put a larger one on that makes a big difference, in performance and noise haha.

I see that the gasser intake manifold has the vacuum port for the brake booster.  If this was put on NA diesel, would you be able to attach the brake booster to the manifold?  Would I be able to get rid of the vacuum pump?  Or I am completely off base and diesels dont create vacuum at the manifold?

Why does a gasser create vacuum? Because the throttle plate won't let air enter the engine, but the piston goes down in the bore creating an empty space that can't be filled, aka a vacuum.

No throttle plate on a diesel, since they regulate fuel rather than air. So no vacuum in the intake.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I'll stick with mine then.

And yea no vacuum. Not a horrible idea though.

The gasser intake works great for the low-hanging VNT turbo setup.
I think the NA diesel one would flow better.

Get the 1.9D (1Y engine) intake manifold from VW Golf MK3 or SEAT Ibiza 6K.

Best intake manifold money can buy for any IDI ou VP/PD TDI engine and they are really cheap over British or German eBay! ;)

The intake ports on the 1Y will be D-shaped though... Not oval like the 1.6.
