97 TDI Swap into MK1
« on: December 04, 2014, 03:19:03 pm »
Hey guys. I have an opportunity to purchase a TDI out of a 97 Passat for roughly 200 bucks.
It has a burnt cylinder. Not a problem, as i would want to rebuild anyway.

Can someone tell me if this is a full electronic engine? What kinds of issues will i be facing? etc, etc, etc.

Should i hold out for the 1.9 AAZ im hunting for?

The stock engine management on all of the TDI engines is all electronic drive-by-wire.  That said, there are excellent mTDI pump pump options that eliminate the electronic engine management.  The end result of a proper mTDI install is all the performance of an eTDI without the added complication and reduced reliability of the electronic engine management.  With an mTDI there are excellent ways to increase performance over stock and you will get 10-15% better fuel economy over an AAZ that is tuned to similar power output.

Thanks for the info!! How much could these said pumps cost?? What else would need to be changed / modified to make the different pump work?

On an AHU or 1Z (a '97 Passat would be a 1Z), you'll need to have the pump mounting bracket machined to fit the pump but that's about it.

The pump that most of us have used with good success can be found on a Land Rover 200 TDI or a 300 TDI.  You can find them on eBay used for a few hundred, and then sell the electronic pump you've got for about the same.  Or you can get a rebuilt/refurbished one for closer to $1200 with a warranty and everything from a few places online.
