....................

Also been working on my other project more, putting a 1V turbo diesel into a 1982 Caddy.

-..............

Saw this a while back but forgot to ask: Do you/ will you have a build thread? I am very interested since I have an 81 Caddy and a spare 1V engine (with low miles) and may want to do the same at some point. Are there any custom work with the motor and transmission mounts? Are you keeping the FF transmission?

No, there's no build thread but I should start one.  Idk why, I just haven't been taking many pictures of what I do on it.
It's really not much, just an easy engine swap that has been documented tons already I feel like.

I bought the engine from QGAP in California, it is in GREAT shape and I actually believe it only has 70 something thousand miles like he claims after going through it a bit.
Every OEM hose clamp is there, every bolt I came across when swapping the motor mount, doing the timing belt/water pump/etc was OEM and was TIGHT TIGHT and looked perfect.
The intermediate shaft bearings also had no wear at all.
I did a compression test and it has 500PSI in every cylinder, I am very pleased with this engine.
It was kind of a big risk purchasing a used engine from across the country with only a low quality Youtube video to go by, but it turned out great.
The real test will be when I actually get it driving and putting lots of miles on it.
Here is a video of me and my dad starting it on September 14th of this year, hanging from a hoist with some red diesel out of a beer can haha
It hadn't been started since the test run in the Youtube video in California before I bought it, so probably around 7-8 months...

I bought the shell about...let me look... About a year and a half ago
Here is a post I made on Vortex when I got it that has some more pictures

I've mostly just done a bunch of fiberglass rust repair on it so far.
I bought this "Make me a believer" rust repair kit from Mercedessource (https://mercedessource.com/store/make-me-a-believer-miracle-paint-rust-repair-starter-kit-manual-and-fiberglass-cloth)
You basically use various weights of fiberglass and a product called "Miracle Paint" by Bill Hersch (http://www.hirschauto.com/products.asp?dept=3) to seal and repair rust.
I watch a lot of videos by Mercedessource because he is a really cool guy and makes really good car videos and he had a few videos on rust repair for old Mercedes so I thought I'd try some on the Rabbit.
I had some really big holes in the driver floorboard and wheel well area that I have spent about 10-15 hours patching up, it is amazing stuff that works great and it is hard as nails when it drys up.

I also put some mint, working vent windows from a 91 Cabrio I got on eBay since one side was missing glass and the other was just a piece of plexiglass siliconed in.

Regarding the 1V engine swap...
There is no custom work at all, just swap the motor mount on the passenger side to the MK1 one.
The transmission I have on it is a 4A 4-speed from a 1984 Rabbit, so it's a MK1 transmission with the MK1 4 speed mount.
I've never driven a MK1 with a 5 speed, all the ones I've ever gotten have been 4 speeds.
I did buy a proper MK1 5 speed transmission mount though in case I ever find one or decide to swap in a 5 speed.

About the only thing custom I can think of that has to be fabbed is the exhaust.
I have a few MK1 downpipes, so it will just be rolling with the stock exhaust for awhile on the road.

Getting a bit older, I keep finding myself in more scenarios where I can use the utility of a small truck more and more.
Hopefully next year I can get it on the road, I had planned to this year but then I found all the rust and it became quite a bit more of a "project".
Plus being 250 miles away to work on it has been slow, hopefully sometime in the first half of the next year I will have it on the road.
I will start a build thread next year about it.
