What are the differences with the above pistons? Are the materials any different? Or is the cut out at the top different? If I stick with my NA pistons I will definately go with the swaintech coatings and may also try the toyota diesel cutout at top. Would it be worthwile to start with the TD pistons in this process, or it would it be a waste?

The difference is cutouts at the bottom of the skirt to get clearance for the oil squirting nozzles on the td.

Just the notch.
A lot of people buy the NA pistons and just notch-em.
Ring sizes are the same...material might be different but I doubt it.
the turbo rings have a 40% higher chromium content, but pistons are the same except for the notch

I think this is just like the Head material debate. I bet VW just figgered it was cheaper and easier to just use the same (better) stuff for both N/A and turbos. But in the beginning it was probably different.

in the beginning it was different materials. when adding the turbo to the engine they had to make changes to crankshaft, rings, pistons, head, head bolts, valves, higher bar injectors, and add an oil cooler. to cut costs they probably just left out oil squirters + oil cooler + regular bar injectors, possibly used the cheaper alloy to fabricate the head, but used the same template of piston without the notches to create their n/a motor.
Sorry Jack I didnt buy them here I screwed up, but when I bought new rings the turbo rings were a different part number and defineately cost more, also in the bentley it states that the turbo rings had a 40% higher chromium content. but i am sure that jtanguay is right they eventtually switched to the same stuff

maybe a while ago you could get two seperate style rings, and now its just amalgamated into one set for both n/a turbo? the turbo rings are probably over kill for the n/a motor, but it would sure last a heck of a lot longer
