81 Caddy door ventilation
« on: September 26, 2014, 07:38:44 am »
I took the door panel off the driver's door in my 81 Caddy to replace a stiff window regulator and to my surprise, found there are 2 large openings where the wires would normally come in. These are openings I can put my hand through and are factory. When on the highway, the wind noise from these openings are quite loud. I know my 92 Jetta do not have these openings. Can I tape shut these openings to reduce noise? There is no rust in the doors.... maybe the vents are responsible for that..... so closing the vents may not be such a great ideal?

No reason why not... Metal duct sealing tape would probably be ideal.

Are these holes between the front fender and the front edge of the door?  Or are they between the door card and the window?  I know I had great results sealing similar areas with the suggested metal tape for duct work.  I also was able to line the inside of the door with a 1/4 inch of rubber flooring material.  Spray contact cement is great for that purpose.

Sorry it took a while but here's a pic. Are all MK1 doors like this or only Caddy's?

And BTW I applied Fluid film along the entire track of the window regulator and it cranks nice and easy now.... didn't have to replace the regulator....it is also rust free, as is the rest of the door. Maybe the large ventilation holes have something to do with it?
