Help needed in the FAQ Section
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:31:39 am »
I had the idea months ago to trim the FAQ section down. It is too large and some links are too old. I am wanting some here to post their issues with the section and we can either fix them or get rid of them. It is hard to recommend someone to the FAQ since they have so many pages of dead stuff. Bottom line is I took out about a page and it is just too much reading for me to get done right now, so if some of you would read a thread and let me know what needs done, I hope I would have enough time to fix that. As most of the time is reading and figuring it out. Let me know, thanks Lucas><>

One thing may be to consolidate the part number threads..  I know it would take some time to sift thought them all, but one concise list would clear a lot out..  Same goes for the countless tool threads..

Some of the procedure related threads like Vince's "pimp your glow plugs" and injector rebuild threads pretty much require their own.. Bu then there are a ton of handly little tips that could be consolidated..

There's 18 bazillion gov mod, and timing mod discussions going on in there too.. And several discussions I've seen that were not so much FAQ worthy as just plain IDI or TDI section discussions..   Good god where to start..

Delete it and start again!

That is the issue I have. There is a ton that doesn't really need to be there and some that does. I would like some help letting me know which to keep and which to make into one.

I'll jump in and help, I have this site open constantly so why not.
Hard to judge how useful some of this stuff is or has been, maybe go by read counts?
A lot of these FAQs are just links posted to websites or calculators that can be found very easily with a simple Google search.
Most of them are in the top 5 results on a vague Google search in fact.
A lot of dead links, herpa derp info, no info, redundant info, oh boy.

I'm starting with the oldest last post date.

http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=647.0

It's just a link to an import parts website...
There are a hundred sites out there now with this same info and pics/ETKA diagrams to go along with them.
Only viewed 3k times in 10 years?? Hmm...

Nothing special here...just some basic Google features and some links that go to posts in the General section that lead to these two sites.
http://www.mayfco.com/comprato.htm http://www.csgnetwork.com/compcalc.html
All I see there are a few very basic formulas on one and a calculator for determining compression ratio.
The CR calculator pops up as first result on Google for any search related to calculating compression ratio.

Topic: Lack of Boost Trouble Shooting.  (Read 4115 times)
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=4348.0

A long wall of text with poor formatting about checking for boost leaks that basically says you should feel around with your hand, or tap multiple pressure gauges and look for differences.
I'm not a fan of this, there are tons of videos and better, well written articles about boost leaks with a simple search on Google/etc.

Topic: DIY brake pressure bleeder  (Read 2673 times)
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=4695.0

One post with one link to a DIY bleeder, not a very good DIY guide at that.
Anyone can type in "brake bleeder" or "pressure bleeder" into search engine and have videos, DIY's of the same thing come up in the first 3 results.
This is nothing special and has nothing to do with VW diesels.

This is actually pretty cool, another little forum on the Bentley Publishers website.  Not much traffic it looks like, but there is def some info there.
Also some discussion on how to find/download pirated software and scans of manuals off Pirate Bay.
Not sure how to handle this one, kind of cool, kind of meh.

A guy asking about turbos with 2 useless replies, nothing special at all here, definitely not FAQ worthy.

A thread with a post with a dead link...delete.
This site is brought up a few times and there is a link to open a working, cached version of this site in a later thread.

Interesting info about what all the numbers mean on the pump, but it is redundant and this info is presented in another thread.

A link to 4crawlers site and a few other posts with links to various old, outdated sites with no real useful info.
4crawlers site is very good and a good resource, but it should be listed in some updated "Good links" sort of sticky maybe.
I vote delete.

Kick ass technical information. Tons of turbo maps, SWEET!!!
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=7069.0

A dead link to http://not2fast.wryday.com/, however http://www.not2fast.com/ works fine.
A cool site with lots of info sure but none really pertaining to diesel.
Maybe a "cool links" sort of post, but not anything FAQ related or worthy to me.

Just a thought - why not create a new subforum for the FAQ stuff, then you can easily make a number of people in to moderators without giving them rights to the rest of the board.

I cannot do that. Red rotors could.

I think we will do ok, it just won't happen overnight.

I have been working on some stuff to put up on the site and some how-tos for in the future. What are some things that you feel that we need on the faq to help fill it out?

I don't think it needs filled out, I think it needs trimmed. Basically, stuff more specific to our cars or stuff that is asked all the time, but not 8 or 9 pages.

That is probably the link I need to sticky at every page. It clears up the FAQ somewhat.
