US To CE2 Turn Stalk Wring
« on: August 10, 2014, 03:25:43 am »
Hey Everyone,

I am in the process of doing a CE2 swap in my 86 US golf Diesel and am having trouble trying to figure out one wire. The wire is coming out of the US turn signal stalk it's Black/Yellow. The electrical diagram only shows 3 wires. The Yellow/Black is the 4th and it is not in any of the diagrams I have been searching through. Any help is appreciated.

Justin

I believe that wire runs over to you headlight switch and is part of the high beam on/off circuit

After taking a gander at the diagram. The hi/lo beam select switch is actually the 4 pin connector with a white black wire going to the headlight switch. The directional switch is a 5 pin connector on the right (ignition switch) side of the column. It has 3 wires in the diagram, GN/BK (hazard switch),  BK/GN (right front and rear parking lights) and BK/WT (left front and rear parking lights). My car's turn signal plug has the extra BK/YL wire not mentioned in the diagram.

Rear wiper??

Horn, washers... Those 2 items ce2 is odd.... Ran into these issues....

Horn for westy golf or pre ce2 completes supplies power to horn... Ce2... Controls ground andconstant power... If you just fix at fusebox... Horn will blow

Washers.... Needs a jumper added... The little blue crimp around 2 wires will work... But how the switch gives power to washer is wrong... Figured it out w testlight... So not hard...

Thank you sir! Good News, the car runs! Couple of bugs I am trying to figure out (instrument cluster) and Ill list them below any help is appreciated.

KEY OUT

Light SW ON --> turn ind light constantly on
Light SW OFF --> turn ind light constantly off

Fuel Gauge full (just filled my tank though, the fuel gauge would 'turn on' when the car was started).

Oil Press Lt flashing

No top brake lt when pedal pressed (not sure about brake lights)

Alt Ind on

Key IN ON POSITION (no start yet)

H2O gauge high and light flashing

All above still applies

START and IDLING

Temp gauge & light high and flashing

Dir Indicator constantly on even when signal switch is turned right and left. No indicator lights at all. No park (running) lights in front (bumper).

No top brake light

Oil pressure ind still flashing

TURN OFF AFTER RUNNING (KEY OUT)

Alt Ind on

Temp Gauge down and light stops flashing

Oil pressure flashing

Turn signal light off

ALSO my side marker running lights work properly

I just tried to test the flashers (none at all) however when I connected the battery cable the turn signal light was off. When I turned the car on and turned on the turn signals the turn signal light would be constantly on (not flashing) in both directions. As a note, I am using a mk3 headlight harness with a mk2 switch, my headlights work both highs and lows. Just no turn signals. Or front running lights.

Alright, update. After moving the Start/Run/Power wire from one place to another (was at U2/10 moved to U1/04) Everything in the gauge cluster works EXCEPT the coolant gauge and light. Checked the wire running from the bay to G2/03 and it checks out. What this tells me is that somewhere?!?! the coolant gauge is picking up something it shouldnt. I pulled the wire going to the coolant temp sensor and the gauge still reads high and flashes.

Still no turn signals or hazards. Checked voltage all the way to the relay...no power to the flasher relay at all...what do?

Yeah, turns out the whole splicing the original US turn/wiper stalk with the turn signal/wipers was more complicated than it sounded based on the fact that they are wired very differently. Hopefully I can find a non-tilt stalk and harness at the yard after work today. Other than that, the car is running great and I havent had to used the fire extinguisher yet. I do get a lot of weird looks from people driving by me when they see I don't have a dash.
