My first TDI!!! AHU mk3
« on: June 04, 2014, 11:21:10 pm »
Hey guys! I've given up on the AAZ, due to me not having the money or the time to finish my project. My DD blew up, and I was forced to buy another car. Well a mk3 Tdi  into my lap for $3000.

I'm going to remove the stage 2 Frank Irving can with still 0 miles on it from my AAZ. Eventually putting it in the new Tdi.

I know I need to get a PD intake, nozzels, ect,

I have a t3 turbo on m AAZ.. I have done some reading on the difference between the t3 and the kkk24.. The 24 being able to push more air. Does anyone have any experience with either of these turbos on an AHU?

I'm looking for a substantial gain, and if it's minimal I'm not going to waste my time. I want to keep it simple with a waste gate turbo, as a vnt turbo can never be rebuilt! That just screams $$$$. So I want a bigger turbo that I will be happy with and won't have to change my down pipe 10x.

Tuning is not an issue, I know a guy. :)

I've spent a lot of time reading through Scott's Tdi page (stealth Tdi) which I know personally and have the pleasure of working on his car when he is feeling lazy ;). I know his ko3/ko4 is not enough for him so I don't want to go that route.

Also I have the Kerma Tdi arp head bolts to put in, of course not needed but either way I have them.

Also if you have parts I need and want AAZ stuff let's make a deal ! :)

Turbo wise, remember the AHU ECU expects to be able to control the wastegate. Older turbos don't have provisions for that which will result in the computer pitching a fit. If you are going M-TDI then no problem, those turbos will work great though they are quite dated!

I have ran both T3, k24, and hybrid T3, not on a TDI, but I have ran them. After having a holset there is no way I would invest in an outdated turbo. From what I have read the T3 is actually bigger and flows more, but it is really not noticeable. If you want a substantial gain buy a holset, the he211w, which I think is now called the 200wg or something will do about double what the old T3 will. It is under 700.00 and will spool about as fast as a vnt 15.
You can have a vnt rebuilt. xsboostturbochargers.com does it for around 350.00. The housing is all that is reused, but it can be done and is done all the time.

Oh I remember watching a video talking about how vnt turbo clearness are so tight that rebuilding them was impossible, I guess there is always someone to figure it out though.

I'm unsure of the differences between the waste gate, please fill me in. I know the older stuff the waste gate looks to be controlled by the turbo itself.

Does the holset have what I need for a Tdi?

k24 has slightly larger wheels, but t3 has a larger turbine housing.  I also think the t3 is more efficient at higher boost levels, i've never seen a compressor map for the k24, but most of the kkk compressor maps i've seen from that era are not efficient above 15psi(while they do flow a good amount and are efficient below that, they just don't flow well at higher boost pressures)

but i agree, you're better off with a newer turbo, unless you're just slapping *** together that you have.

The holset has what you need for over 200 whp in a TDI I believe.

I just posted a for sale of my gt2256vk in the for sale section. It would be an awesome turbo if you like VNT.

Regarding the AHU computer and its control of the turbo: it basically just needs a wastegate can with both a boost and a vacuum fitting on it. The computer uses vacuum to open the wastegate when it doesn't want boost. The K24 has the can integrated into the turbo body so there aren't many options on that side but most newer turbos use a bolt on can. You might be able to swap stuff around or talk to a turbo rebuilding shop as they can probably make something work.

Really though if you have the computer and plan to keep it you are going to need a tune anyhow, you would be better off getting new chips for the computer flashed to control a VNT and then you've got lots of awesome options as far as modern turbos go.

Ok so going the VNT route.. Due to some tuning features I was told about. No controller needed.
Going with a bigger 2056 or 2256 is going to be a bit of work right? Custom manifold, oil lines, ect.

Check out the gtb1756.  It's pretty much the same size as a 2056 but is far more efficient and spools at a lower rpm.  Vanbcguy is running one on his mtdi mk3.  If you want to go bigger I would suggest the gtb2260.  These are both very modern turbos and work excellent as a daily driver.  All you need to run a vnt on an AHU is the n75 valve from an ALH, a 3 bar map and a chip tune.  Vnt turbos are also rebuildable.
Toyota truck 4x4 with Mtdi, M-vnt gt1749va, 11mm pump, fmic, smog .216 nozzles.  Sold!
Working on 1993 4runner mtdi, gtb1756vk, 11mm pump, smog .216 nozzles, custom 1" thick adaptor plate, pd150 intake manifold.

What platform installing ?

my build is a thi /ahu m-tdi 12mm
ported head, stage two cam, ceramic coated pistons
Try to get Pautner to make me some TI rods
PD150 lh facing

Iam doing a tubular exhaust manfold( top)mount from darkside
The downpipe iis being made in 2.5 s/s from Techtonics

This will allow others to have a bolt on pkg with this top mpount turbo..

I will make a 180 degree silicone intake from the turbo as there lh facing , (not rh facing like others )that will turn into a 60 degree bend backing into the mkii airbox

I have a set of callaway tubing coming from a owener, the hard tubing will be reproduced in silicone assy
No metal pipe, no heat soak, just clamp on Callaway style intercooler, clamp on turbo outlet & intake intake and your done
