Sealing PS steering U-Joint shaft
« on: June 02, 2014, 09:32:28 pm »
My PS works great on my 1981 VW Caddy Pickup.

However, the original shaft plug does not work right, the joint simply pushes it out, and in the winter quite a draft.
The joint on the PS sit and fits right at the firewall hole.  I have had it wrapped in insulation for the last 5 years, but that is a poor fix.

Though of a 2 piece temp CV boot, took it back, too stiff and shaft hole to large

Thinking of using an old outer CV boot.  Split, and wrap around shaft, and overlap.  Lacing wire  or wire ties in several boot grooves to hold.  Fix to floor.  Anybody got a better idea?

I can/ you can make a round seal

small hole to match o.d. of shaft

small slits outward from the center hole ( 6/8 )

pop rivet in place

thus will require to remove shaft thou

I stock 1/16 and 3/32 black silicone seal with fiberglass insert

I mfg aircraft engine valve cover gaskets, some aircraft have 12, the large radials have 72 valve covers per engine

I would be interested, however, on a different topic of a long rubber hose from water pump to left sided bottom inlet Schirrocco race radiator.  I was forced to use this radiator with AAZ with AC and serpentine because the lower radiator hose rubbed the hose plus there was no way to connect ac hoses and have lower right hose.  I can provide PN of hoses I used.

For this joint/shaft cover I have a new CV boot to wrap and pop rivet without pulling and sliding boot over shaft.

Believe I won't be the last to use serpentine and want AC in Caddy.

I have PN for radiator thermo sender too.  This radiator is superior to every OEM radiator I have uses andI can run freeway plus speeds and needle in dash don't move.  That is with Giles pump an lead foot.
I have designed lower radiator hoses so starter can be pulled with hose mounted.  What I am unsure of is whether there is room for an aftercooler and piping. Have kit to install and find out though.  Will post when done. Also need to connect & charge AC.

Fairly certain others may want to pattern build.

Wayne are you going to let me make the silicone hoses, instead of the hard tubing ?

or did you install ?

I have installed lower hoses using two separate hoses and a 6" metal step up size adapter .  I support the hose at the metal center. Originally I had a longer metal tube but after Giles pump need more flex.  Was getting minor coolant leaks after hard run. Fine when driven civilally.  Need to install Calloway to see fitment.  Currently, I can't make it leak.  I launched so hard I snapped boltheads off left CV shaft to flange.   No leak.  Design works. Can remove & replace starter without dropping coolant. Now need to see if Calloway kit will have interference.  MTF

I would just coat it with a ton of anti-seize. It won't wash off too easily and you won't have to go through the trouble of taking it off etc.
