New guy with 1.6td
« on: May 28, 2014, 05:21:48 pm »
Good afternoon,

I wanted to introduce myself and post some thoughts/questions about my car that I have. I've got an 86 jetta with a 1.6td. I have owned a handful of gas mkII's and tons of other old cars (aircooled VW's, old BMW's etc) but this is my first diesel I've ever had. The jetta is my daily driver and it's getting a little long in the tooth, loses tons of oil via leaks everywhere and loses coolant somewhere. The car is hard to start in the cold and it makes a loud clack when running. I am thinking of tearing it apart for a rebuild/performance build and wanted to bounce some ideas off of you. I've done a good bit of reading here and the vortex, hoping that I'm on the right path.

On the inside I figured it would go all back to stock, as far as the head goes though, I haven't pulled the valve cover to look and see if it's hydraulic or mechanical. Is there a way to tell from the outside which it is? Are these heads prone to cracking and warping? I know the car has run hot a few times, I don't know if I'll need to look at replacing that? If I need oversized pistons how much can I expect to dish out for those?

As far as the other bits go, I was looking to put a borg warner KKK k14 on it (linked below) and run a giles pump. I am going to have my injectors popped locally, but if they need rebuilt should I just buy rebuilt giles injectors? Only other modification I was thinking was a 2.5 exhaust ( I need to look at it as I don't want to spend $300 on a TT downpipe) and an aftermarket intake and intercooler.

I was also trying to figure out the head gasket, I found that the below ARP head studs are a must and I should run a HG from an AAZ 1.9?

I know that's a small description and I'm sure I'll run into tons more issues, but that's what's been bouncing around in my head. I am not looking to make maximum power but would love to make close to 100hp and get better gas mileage than I currently get.

If you change the fan assy and go to a flexalite you can move the radiator back two inches, plenty of room for a intercooler after this

I like this one

I have a rh facing intake ( pd150 ) that will work well
