What turbos fit?
« on: May 12, 2014, 10:06:53 am »
1.6TD will only other VW diesel turbos fit (IDI only, will TDI bolt up?)?
What is the flange on a 1.6TD ( http://www.miataturbo.net/useful-saved-posts-8/glossary-common-turbo-flanges-52542/ )? Will I need to contact these guys to get something made http://www.bmcrace.com/index.php?cPath=60_62 ?
What about the DP (are they pretty universal, or am I looking at custom)?
Are coolant cooled turbos ok to use or only oil cooled?
Will a gasser turbo work on a 1.6TD?

I am not concerned about the intake as any exhaust shop should be able to get that going. Nor am I concerned about the oil feed and return as I have a place that can custom make that.

Thank you for all the input. I searched the forums but the only things I found lead to dead links.

The flange is specific to the IDI diesel engines, you'll need an adapter to use anything else.

Gasser turbos generally won't work well as they usually don't provide boost till high RPMs. The diesel wants lots of air by 2500 RPM or so.

Downpipe will be custom unless you stick with a stock turbo.

diesel turbos are fairly high ratio, as vanbcguy alludes.

the upside is that up through at least the ALH it seems that the exhaust manifold pattern on the head is the same as all 8v vw engines, so you can get aftermarket turbo manifolds with t3 flanges pretty easily.

as said, vw turbo manifolds are only compatible with vw turbos. though some people fabricate adapters.

OK. Good info. I knew diesel turbos needed to spool much quicker. But I did not know diesels were incompatible with gasser turbos. That really helps narrow (and consequently makes more difficult) my search.
Knowing the exhaust flange is 8v makes it easy to find an after market header. If I can find a standard T3 flanged diesel turbo that is sized between a K14 and K24 that is what I will need.
DP will be custom, I got a guy for that. And it will be 2.5".

Does anyone know or know where to find the specs for the K14 and K24?

Well, it's not so much that they are fundamentally incompatible.

it's a question of ratio. Diesel engines rev lower and have a completely different power band, so the ratio of hot side to cold side is far more drastic.

I know BMW drag racers who put holset hx30 (diesel) turbos on their straight six gas engines. fwiw they don't expect to get a lot of life out of them.

And I know guys who upgrade isuzu 4bd1-t diesel engines (like a 4bt, but better) by pulling a td04hl-15t off of a volvo v70 in a junk yard and having it rebuilt with a 19t compressor wheel.

VNT turbos, of course, are a completely different approach than wastegated turbos, and require a completely different control scheme.

GEE-BEE: I called them up and got a lot of good info. And less but different questions and more research to do. He said the factory Garrett is the money one. And that a T3 will probably have to be custom. But also if I find a parting out MazdaSpeed 3 to snag the turbo, manifold and DP off of it.

Tim: Ya, the ratios were expressed quite a bit. So I now know of what I need which is about .36 A/R hot side. And a Holset presents a set of challenges because I would need to custom flange my exhaust. Although I know a shop for that. And after I looked at what it takes to run a VNT I decided no. Because its the opposite of the reason I got a MK2, simplicity.

hahaha, you do realize that the stock vw t3 is actually bigger than the k24 you had on before, like i said in your other thread, if you thought your k24 spooled slow theres something wrong other than the turbo size.

Rabbit: It has a completely different ratio setup. Thus it can spool quicker than a K24. Also the Garrett turbos can be upgraded in many different ways to allow for even more precise tuning.

it does not have a completely different ratio setup, on the intake side they are nearly identical in size, and on the exhaust side(which effects spool up the most) the t3 is a .36 a/r vs a .30 a/r for the k24.  I've drive cars with either turbo and the k24 spools up a little faster.  And i'm well aware that t3's can be made into hybrids to make a better turbo since i have already built one.

Rabbit: OK. I must have misunderstood what the guy was telling me about it. He was probably talking to the customization of it. Thanks for the clarification.
So my goal would then be to get a Garrett and do it right then.
