Is this intermediate shaft "slop" normal?
« on: April 16, 2014, 03:58:24 pm »
Hi guys, I am doing the timing belt on my mtdi ahu and noticed there was a little slop/play when rotating the intermediate shaft pulley. There is no in/out or side to side play so the bearings should hopefully be fine.

Is this a normal sound because of the teeth on the intermediate shaft engaging with the vac/oil pump?

here is a video .(click on picture)

Yeah normal, really the vac pump won't give much resistance until the oil pump spins. The slop is a combination of the teeth and the slop in the bottom of the vac pump that drives the oil pump I would assume.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I thought it was just the lashing but after I took the time to remove the pulley I found that there is in fact in and out play but no side to side.any specs on how much play is acceptable?

You don't want much, but I don't know the spec. See the Bentley for proper specs of course. I am just going off of the video, but it looks to me that what you had was normal, you could pull the IM shaft out and the vac pump out and inspect for wear if you are really concerned.

Apparently the bentley manual has no info about it. According to other reports its normal to gave a little in and out play.

Once the motor is running the shaft is loaded in one direction by the thrust from the bevel gear on the end, so as long as it does not make noise from a huge amount of play you should be fine. It takes a fair amount of torque to turn the oil pump, so unless you lose oil pressure it is pretty much self aligning.
