front hub change?
« on: April 01, 2014, 01:54:00 pm »
well, the car is finally running nicely...thanks again to all that helped....

driving to work this morning, car started to shake like crazy with a marble like sound ....pulled over...checked the front wheel....pull off the centre cap, find 3 bolts loose..and the fourth snapped off and bouncing around inside the wheel cap...the rest of that bolt is deep inside the "hub" ...cant get at it with pliers or anything...so 1 of my 4 wheel bolts is useless....

also the alignment screw that holds the rotor on is stripped.(was already) ..so im looking at replacing the hub..(the rotor is fine...i just cant get it off the hub without drilling it out...

how hard is it to replace the hub...?...might be easier to replace rather than get the bolt out or tap and drill a new alignment hole for the rotor..

Thanks

Paul

If you are good with a torch...

If it snapped off flush you could weld something to it and turn it out. Or you could drill it and bust small pieces out.

Next question is why did it do this? Did you use the longer wheel bolts and they are bottomed out?

None of the damage would require a hub replacement.  Drill and tap should do the job.  But like was mentioned, Why is this happening?  Long bolts or loose bolts from tire change or brake work?

Ya I'm not entirely sure ..,. It's been a long time since I drove it... I should of rechecked and  torqued the wheel nuts I guess

Could definitely be a wonky solenoid.  Also could be a bad ground to the engine.  If it were the starter motor itself it probably wouldn't work at all now (or at best work very poorly) while the solenoid can be a bit more finicky.  Did you have any kind of a 'click' at all when trying to start or just straight nothing?

Flaky ignition switch is also a possibility.

If it happens again try jumping a wire to the small spade connector on the solenoid from the large red wire at the starter. If it tries to start your starter is fine and the problem lies elsewhere. If not then the issue is in the starter.

If you decide to replace the hubs, better just replace the bearings as well as it is just a little more work and then the job will be done. The whole deal is an unfortunate mess. And, I imagine you are beginning to see that.
