intermediate shaft / vacuum pump question
« on: March 30, 2014, 10:51:05 pm »
So on my aaz 1.9td, I am not getting good contact at the vacuum pump.
The pump is a vane style pump that I took off a 80's 1.6td quantum.
The bore on the aaz is considerably larger than the part of the pump that sits there.
Are there different sizes of vacuum pumps? I took off a vane style that was broken but I'm not sure what I did with it.
is there something wrong with my intermediate shaft?
I.M. Shaft seems to have no up/down play, but does go in and out about an inch or so, with no pulley on it..
The pulley I have for it only goes on with the vw stamping facing the block??

I'm worried I may have gotten pulleys mixed up in the mess that I had laying around.

I almost fired it up, but something told me to prime the oil system so I took the pump out and when I went to put it back in... it felt weird.

this thread seems to have some answers...

anny thoughts?

Thanks in advance

No expert here but as far as I know, the shaft shouldn't move but a tiny bit. The pulley has nothing to do with it. An inch would cause the gear to disengage but not to worry - the engine would be out if time (and toast) because the belt would slip off I think.

AIUI, 1.6 and 1.9 vac pumps do not interchange.

The intermediate shaft should not have more than ~1mm axial travel (if that). Most likely the thin flange on the shaft has broken off.

I've only rebuilt one of these engines so take my comments with that understanding in mind. . .

Assuming you do get another IM shaft, you should check the bearing clearance with a dial indicator (for sideplay). The oil port that feeds this bearing is designed to flow a very small amount of the total flow. A worn fit may starve the rest of the bearings.

The only difference is that the 1.6 shaft has the bump for the lift pump right?

It definitely sounds like the lip is broken on your shaft. AHU and 1Z are the same so that should make it easier to find.

The one I had spare is in a cubvan or close to it right now, but the AAZ had a different spacing on the gear end IIRC. I would measure them if I had it in my possession and let you know for sure.
