headstud checks
« on: February 19, 2014, 03:34:52 pm »
hey guys, got the 1.6 torn down and painted now i am installing the arp 11mm studs. cleaned all the holes with a tap of course and they screw in just fine with the arp lube provided. my question is regarding the headstuds all being at the same height. my studs do not appear to be all in at the same amount 1/16th inch and less differences. is this an issue at hand tight? do they even have to be in the same amount? as ARP states "install hand tight" its not an exact science. but just wanted a second opinion on whether this is an issue or if anyone had ever checked before. i could see where perhaps 5mm could be a big problem in differences and the threads may need to be gone through again but this is why i am asking. thanks in advance.

I/d go hand tight and back off ~1/2 turn.  Bottoming a stud in the bore is never good.
Did you use a bottoming tap?  The tapered ones can still leave a good bit of junk behind.  If you don't have one, cut the tip off a regular one or modify an old head bolt and it will work pretty good.
