1.6 n/a turbo build questions.
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:42:00 pm »
ok, so I'm building a mk2 1.6d motor up with a custom (and proven) turbo setup.  the person I got this build just used the vnt-15 turbo off a mk4 tdi.  he said this turbo was less than ideal and only produced about 16-18 psi.  the build is good to 28 psi easy.  I'm not to good with turbos (yet, thank goodness for forums), what is a better turbo that I could run?

The K24 off an actual 1.6td will do 24 PSI no problem.

If you are prepared to deal with the control system for a VNT you could probably run a vnt-17 at that boost level.

What are you looking for - new/used, vnt/wastegate, etc

I'm looking to run internal wastegate, this sounds the easiest avenue with my low knowledge in the turbo field.  I'm looking to make some power off of this build also.  basics of the build are aaz headgasket, modified I.P (I already have an aaz non-turbo on my current motor), turbo, intake mani from a 1.8 (I think that's a counterflow mani, not sure though), and factory injectors rebuilt with 6.5l chevy nozzles.

OK - your intake choice will complicate things a little. The factory 1.6td exhaust manifold and turbo have severe clearance issues with anything but the stock TD intake. So you are automatically looking for a different exhaust manifold solution, which in turn shifts around the "easiest" turbo choice.

The older 1.8 has a good manifold but as Vbc said it will limit what turbo can be put on there. Easiest with that will be a low mounted turbo, so it will not be something stock to the idi. A custom setup like the hoset I have would work too, I think, as it is mounted straight back.

non of the parts I'm using are from a 1.6td.  the exhaust mani is tdi mani from a mk4 tdi.  here is the full list I'm using.

-VNT15 turbo/manifold from a TDI
-Multilayer steel head gasket from a 1.9 AAZ diesel
-ARP head studs from a gasser
-Rebuilt injectors with chevy 6.5l diesel nozzles (same flow/angle specs as the vw nozzles, but far cheaper)
 -1.6 turbodiesel injection pump
 -1.8l gasser intake manifold

that's the setup minus the 1.6td I.P.  I'm going to have my N/A aaz pump sent out for modifications and upgrading.  I just forgot the guys name, I think he's in Canada, but I've heard from multiple sources he does good work.

Is that the manifold from a north american ALH which has that EGR port on top of the manifold?

There are known clearance issues between that and 8v gasser intakes. Or 8v NA diesel intakes for that matter.

Nothing you can't fix with a grinder, is the impression i get.

this is what my friend had to say about his setup

Quote
'Tis not a 1.8t manifold, it's a 1.8 counterflow gasser manifold, from a CIS car. Prob came from a rabbit gti or an old golf or something. I had to grind a mounting tab thing off of the back of it to make it fit with the TDI setup. I'm not sure if it will fit with a stock turbodiesel manifold.

right, but when you said internal wastegate I didn't think VNT.

I don't want to use the vnt 15.  I'll probably use it to start with I'd like a standard turbo (?) without variable geometry.
