New Style IP Pulley timing
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:57:23 am »
I've looked at a couple of the "how to"s, but I've never really seen a good description of how to adjust the timing on the newer style three bolt IP pump pulleys.

After doing a head gasket on a 1997 AAZ I need to get things in time, and I've had the center bolt off the IP pulley, so want to make sure things are right.

As far as I can tell, it's normal timing up to a point, crank at TDC, cam sprocket loose, cam locked in place.  For the IP the 6mm pin in the right spot, locking the inner hub to the pump body, and the three bolts on the sprocket are loose, with the sprocket set roughly in the middle range of the slots.

So to fine tune time it I do the following:

Tension the belt, tighten the cam bolt, tighten the three IP sprocket bolts, spin it around a couple times, make sure there's no interference and that everything lines up ok.

Then insert the dial gauge into the pump, see where the timing sits.  If out, I insert the 6mm pin in the IP, loosen the three bolts on the pulley, then rotate the pulley (facing the pulley, counter clockwise to retard, clockwise to advance) till I get the timing I want, then lock the bolts?

Or do I set to TDC, loosen the three bolts, then rotate the center nut until I get the right timing then lock the three bolts?

Am I missing anything?

That's the hard way as the pulley is interfaced with the belt so you'd have to rotate everything.  You also have the directions backwards.  If the toothed part of the sprocket goes CW then the timing is retarded.

Or do I set to TDC, loosen the three bolts, then rotate the center nut until I get the right timing then lock the three bolts?

^^This.^^  Center nut/hub goes CW to advance, CCW to retard.

Thank you.  I ended up playing with it a bit and came to the same conclusion you did.  it's sure easier than the older style adjustment of wrestling the pump around   ;D
