What is the best way way for me to get parts for my AAZ, here in the US?
Online vendor? I'm doing a conversion to a Vanagon, so what vehicle do I use for reference?
Things I can think of that I'll need soon -
Gaskets
Seals
Timing belt/kit
Power steering pump belt(no ac)
Upper timing cover(if I can't find a used one here)

Maybe order all the stuff through an auto parts store/dealer across the border and pick it up there? I think oreilly can order the stuff for an aaz like tbelts. They sell good timing belt stuff if you pick gates.

Gaskets - with the exception of the headgasket use a 1998 Jetta TDI
Seals - Same as above
Timing belt/kit - If you have an early head with the larger stud use 1.6 parts. If it's the later head with the smaller stud, use a 1.6 belt and the 1998 TDI tensioner. You can probably use the TDI belt as well but I'm not positive about tthat.
Power steering pump belt(no ac)- Just find the belt length and order that one from anywhere.
Upper timing cover(if I can't find a used one here) I think you can make a TDI one work. Again, 98 Jetta.

Couple of gotchas on the AAZ;
If replacing the valve stem seals, measure the old ones, there's 7mm and 8mm valves in the AAZ, depending on year.
Head gasket aftermarket brands only come in 2 or 3 notch, if you need the thinnest 1 notch you need to go through a VW dealer. Make sure you don't order or get sent a TDI head gasket, not the same.

Another AAZ gotcha would be a 1 notch HG. They can be found, but you'll need patience on shipping no one stock them locally.
Possibly crossing the Border if needed.

If for some reason you need a 1 notch headgasket I can order that for at better prices than the dealer.
I can actually order any of the parts you need.

not that anyone is thinking of trying it, but i would almost guarantee that a tdi gasket will leak compression into the coolant on an aaz.

Confirmed; I have parsonally purchased a lot of parts for the AAZ through NAPA. Granted, many have to be special ordered, but they can get them. Just provide part number, and they will get you OEM brands under their umbrella european importing brand Altrom Imports.

This also, as they have good closeout deals. Just make sure to be careful the part you're buying has the correct part humber and looks like what you are replacing.
Also try AutohausAZ.com for some smaller parts; use a 1996 Jetta TDI under vehicle selection, the engine code will still say AAZ.

Why?

yes i love altrom, i never get napas parts if they can order the altrom stuff instead.
tdi gasket doesn't have that extra foil part that goes under the pre cup, so compression could leak around that way. not sure if the aaz gasket uses foil like 1.6td, but u get the idea.

Partsgeek.com lists AAZ specific parts... delivered from US based distributors at (usually) better prices, accessed from the convenience of your computer.
