1.9 turbo on 1.6
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:15:41 pm »
has anyone put a 1.9 turbo on 1.6?
I have heard the 1.9 has a smaller turbo so it spooled up faster.

Yes the 1.9 turbos are smaller. If you get a T2 or K14 you will only need to change the turbo, oil return, intake boot and boost hose. Everything else should fit but you may need to bend the oil feed line.

If you get a K03, you will need the 1.9 exhaust manifold and also the downpipe.

As mentioned above, there were two sizes of turbos used on the AAZ, a "K03" and a "K14".

The K03 is a great choice if you are sticking around stock boost levels.  They will spool just off of idle so boost comes on super quick, but their maximum SUSTAINABLE boost isn't much more than about 12-14PSI.  Anything more than that and they'll grenade.

The K14 is a little bit slower than the K03, but still much quicker than the K24/T3 that came stock on the 1.6.  It is good up in to the 18-20 PSI range.  Some folks have run them higher, but I don't think longevity has been all that good.  To me the K14 is what "should have" come on the 1.6TD originally.

thanks for the info.
does the k03 have the same exhaust flange as the 1.6 turbo?
I was told certain 1.9 turbo are a direct bolt on.

I've been running a K03 on my 1.6td with an auto trans. Great for around town, seems to be good on the highway? Peaks at 1 bar, but I haven't tried to tweak it the boost any higher.

Will have a better feel when I get the 5 speed in.

go for the bigger turbo.

Why? It's pointless if you are running stock boost levels. Although a larger turbo will last longer since it's never really spooled up.

Why? I like a bigger turbo. Every time I went to a bigger turbo over the last turbo I liked it more. Even at stock boost levels of 10-12psi I like the biggest turbo I have run the Holset HE221w better than the stock VW anything.

Id say the k03 would be a perfect match for a stock-to-mild 1.6. Absolute perfect match. Full boost and power before 2000rpm is a good driveable power range.

K14 would be a close second though.

My 1.6 TD K24 with stock intake and exhaust is boosting 15psi, and is probably close to half the power of my brothers 1.9 AAZ with the K03 at 15psi.. granted it has a cone filter and no muffler.. I can't see that being responsible for nearly twice the power.. I have tuned both pumps, and they are close enough to be called identical. Both are 9mm 1.6TD pumps. Fuel turned all the way up.

Can we even compare 12psi from a super small turbo to 12psi of a very large turbo? I understand that the outlet pressure of 12psi is the same regardless. BUT 12psi from an older smaller turbo at say %60 efficiency, or the larger brand new one at like %74.. To move 12psi through the larger one are you not actually moving WAY MORE air to do so.

Just saying from a t3, k24, modded t3, to holset  I liked the bigger turbos better.

I agree with you, but how many of those were on a bone stock 1.6L engine?

None.

I personally think if someone has a giant downpipe they all work well. *buy the 3" for sale section* LOL
