Mk1 Heater Core Replacement

I am about to do my a/c box from my rabbit... Mine is currently sitting in my studio out of the car... Figured I won't have to replace anything in there for a while.

Hey I survived and now I have a new working heater core.

It really wasn't too bad of a job. Once the lower dash panels were off - it was basically, pull the heater hoses going into the firewall,  loosen the 4 bolts in the w.wiper tray,  turn the heater sideways and pull out the core - as suggested by a few of you

There was no need to pull the whole heater assembly out or even play with the dash (other then the above)

It took me really only 2- 2.5 hrs & that was working slowly.  Also discovered that a mk2 blower switch works in place of a mk1  switch - just need to use the mk1 knob to make the fan positions jive with the mk1 heater control template

ps My back survived well & was actually more sore trying to bend over the engine compartment and try to connect the cold start cable. ( that was my other goal today)

switch direct fit... except... no off.. but since you have a 3 speed fan use 4th as off..

in mk2 they added a off spot to the def lever.. and removed the off on the fan switch... just plug it in.. turn past 3 for off..

I was also surprised,  at how exposed to the outside weather elements the electrics on the blower fan are   

Design flaw?

 Or just hope the rubberised coating on the resistor\capacitor thingamadealies keeps the weather out?

I think the engineers did it that way on purpose.  To get the heat off the big resistor.  Mine doesn't seem all that worse for wear but I do have an intact rain tray.  Corrosion on the wires seems higher than normal as the hot and cold cycle on the heat may have something to do with that.

Just my ideas on their ideas.
