car has the original 4 speed transmission and has yet to have any performance mods done since the engine swap. but the engine is the 1.6td high output version from the mk2 gtd's so it should have better perfomance over the standard 1.6td

Yep, first step is to figure out the 2-letter code stamped into the bottom of the transaxle bellhousing. There are several different possible combinations of 4th gearsets and ring and pinion ratios.
Secondly, it would be handy to know the rpm's of the engine. Do you have a tach? I get the impression that they were not common on MK1 diesels, but they are a handy instrument to have.

not sure of the trans code, but will try to get it tonight and no tach, only have the speedo and a few warning lights...have been trying to figure out how to tastefully add a few gauges, but haven't figured that out yet

I have never met one with a top speed so low
stock tires with fn tranny I know I can go over the typical 85 mph I typically hit on the freeway in the morning.
I got an 83 gas gti recently with 6% smaller tires and holy cow im hitting 4000 rpms and above on the freeway and then I back off for fear of blowing something. only been up to 70 or so in it. I hate driving that car

I get a kick out of the 'high output engine' comment. The engine is no different aside from the injector nozzles and a smaller turbo. The higher output came pretty much exclusively from the intercooler system. If you didn't intercool it, then it is no longer a high output engine.

I'm not the world's leading expert on VW 020 4-speeds, but there are 2 basic families of them. There is the "3 + E", which has a fairly close range 1st through 3rd, then a very big step to 4th gear. 4th gear is 0.71 to 1 in these boxes. Codes for these tranmissions are GL, GP, and GY. The first 2 have 3.89 ring and pinions. GY should be a 4.17 R&P.
The second family is more of standard set of ratios, with either 0.91 or 0.97 for 4th gear, and 3.89 R&P. Codes for those should be GC or GN, with some variation between model years.
Example calculations - assuming a GN code trans, with 155/80/13 tires, gives about 4400 rpms at 78 mph.
Remember that these cars were built during an era of 55 mph federal speed limits in the USA.
In general, these guys running 100+mph are not using the same 4 speed gear ratios and tire sizes that were OEM stock in the early 80's.

sorry for throwing out comments like that...i am well aware that it is very similar to the standard 1.6td...just stated that to give a refernece to what engine i was talking about...anyway i bet the low top speed has little to do with the ~10hp i am missing from not having the intercooler setup yet

85 Mk. II golf with 200 lbs. of tools and boots and clothes with standard K24 and ACH trans: still pulling upward at 92 mph at about 4,000 ft. elevation. This is with 175/70-13 tires NOT adequately balanced
. I've got a commercial license to protect (and highway patrol with no sense of humor) so I will probably never know exactly what it is capable of.

89 Jetta 1.6NA w 5sp (AOP)... >90mph no sweat, but kinda loud.
85 Jetta GL 1.6TD w 5sp (AGS)... >90mph easypeasy, but no EGT gauge yet, so very briefly.

have hit several times the 220km/h mark(gti speedo)on my mk2 with 4s tranny.
was screaming over 5000rpm to do that but it would do more if i wanted to.dynoed 139hp crank but even in stock form(70hp)it will do above 180km/h so your problem might be gearing too short...
on a more relaxed note my 1.9td passat with cyp tranny will do 200km/h at 4000 lol
great highway cruiser!
