Biodiesel
« on: February 25, 2006, 01:06:53 pm »
I have been doing some research into making biodiesel from waste cooking oil. I am just currious if there are any Toronto(Ontario) and surrounding area guys who make their own? If so would it be possible to meet up and go over the pros and cons(if any) and just go over it in general?
Thanks

I'm not from Ontario (I'm in the US), but I'm brewing my own bio in 35 gallon batches made from soybean oil  in a homemade processor and I'd be happy to discuss / answer questions about it.  I've got some pretty good internet resources for you to check out as well.

Right now I'm using it to heat my house, but once it gets warmer, I'll start running it in the cars...

Sweet dude, I may want to come down and check out your rig, I'd like to see how it works as I someday want to start making my own from WVO.  Maybe when it gets a little warmer.... :P

No problem... I'd be happy to show you.  I see biodiesel get more and more press these days.  People used to think I was nuts (for brewing bio in addition to the VW thing), but now they take an interest.

I've already brewed about 140 gallons so far in my processor and it's going great!

Here's a pic of  my processor (appleseed design using a hot water heater)...
Works great and produces bio at 48 cents a gallon.

Bruce Mortland, who's a member of columbustdidrivers (a Yahoo group), is part of a co-op that makes bio.

I'll get the article once I'm outside of the NCF (Nazi Content Filter - this definitely applies to LACA's filters).

Anyway, I know he was working on setting up a tour of the facility (corner of one of the member's garages). IIRC, he is NOT using an Appleseed.

Thanks for all the input. I will try and catch VW Scully on here. I am thinking I want to have something up and running this summer. I have been doing a lot of research, there seems to be many diff. methods of doing this.

Hey;
Yes I'm here :) I don't spend as much time on here in Winter since my Rabbit hibernates for a few months and I spend Winter in a Chevy truck!
Anyway, I am still planning on having a Spring BioDiesel GTG once my processor is back up and running for people interested in BioDiesel homebrewing. I've been making it for about a year, but only got my processor built in the Fall. Bear in mind, I'm no expert ;) I'm just a tree hugging VW girl who wants to make her own fuel :D so I do! I'm slowly figuring out the best way to work my processor, filter the WVO etc. and made a few batches last year and have about 20 litres left from October which is settling nicely to be used in the Rabbit as soon as she 'wakes up' next month :).

For more info. visit my nifty little BioDiesel page here! :D
