good debate question
« on: April 10, 2006, 09:16:24 pm »
I'm sorting out my 92 jetta ALH tdi w/mechanical pump.  Is there any real advantage to getting bigger nozzles, since the pump is mechanical and more fuel can be dialed in by the fuel enrichment screw.  I currently have stock Lt injectors...not the .216 the smaller ones and with the fuel screw turned in a little...I'm getting light smoke conditons off idle and 20+psi of boost with little to no smoke.

The wastegate has been disabled.  The pump is a stock 11mm Fiat pump with boost LDA.  VW GTD, 1,9TD style KKK turbo.  Factory GTD intercooler.   The pump needs to have the governor mod, as it killing power up top.  But I can run 22-25psi in fifth gear CTN tranny on a flat section of road....the speedo isn't hooked up so I don't know how fast I'm going but I'm definitely the fastest car on the road.

I bought a bigger set of injector nozzles...but I may have wasted my money.   There's a lot of potential fuel still in the pump without going to bigger injectors.  I think I may have been better off buying a "tuningekiel" the modified LDA cone in germany for more power on boost than nozzles.

Bigger nozzles is the way to go with a electronically controlled pump, but a M-tdi i'm not so sure.
Anyone with a M-tdi comments welcome.

I did notice an improvement when I fitted the 110hp ones going from the 1Z 90hp ones.

I do however think my time would have been better spent playing with the pump in retrospect.

Wish I knew then what I know now!

yes I agree, time is better spent on the pump.  I definitely need to do the governor mod.  Even with the governor at stock levels the car will pull 20+ psi in 2nd thru 5th.  1st gear, I can only get 15psi, not enough load from the get go and then the govenor starts pulling all the fueling back as the rpm increases.  I also need to hook up a tach.  My M-tdi is loud though...i was wondering is you have the same noise issues.

i think the noise issue is the extra cubes,,,, its a deeper throatier growl,,,i think its cause  its a bigger engine,,,,idont bother to get on it too much in first i cant,,,instant wheelspin,,,yea itll rev out too quick, and top out revs before boost,, i think its the extra torque when the boost isnt on,,it has way more off boost torque thanmy old 1.6 td,,,,wow how fast does it seem to go in first?? its gotta be taller than mine,,,,,,im not sure, but my 0-60 time may be lame, cause im in4 th or 5th by then, short shift and it goes good,,,as soon as boost comes on in 2nd start shiftin fast,,,,,lettin it pull mad torque from 2000 to 3200 or so,,it rips your head off,,,,,
Throttle cables ftw

Your right is does have a deeper growl.  I have the ALH engine and the setup with the M-pump doesn't allow my to put the engine sound cover on.  The pump LDA is very close to the hood.  I can  get wheel spin easiliy in 1st, but once I'm rolling I'll run out of revs quickly and the governor kicks in, starting in 2nd is usually easier. I had a turbo gas rabbit and that had a traction problem.  This setup is in an a2 and the car is heavier, plus I'm not a holeshot artist.  I don't want to break anything.
