So as a few of you know I converted my 1992 cabriolet to run on a 2bbl carbuerator. It runs and drives great, but as it stands It has a points ignition system. The key assembly has no acessorry mode to keep the ignition off so if you leave the car in the ON position the points will burn out . How difficult would it be to change the ignition assembly from the 1992 cabriolet to that of a 75 rabbit to gain this acessorry mode?
wouldn't you need all the wiring to do so?
I am thinking a 75 rabbit and a 92 cabby share NOTHING in common so this would be tricky to keep it OE.
Why not just add the stereo to an auxiliary switched power? Lets face it, what else needs to be on with acc? lol
When I go and get the car inspected you shut the car off and then then check the lights, wipers, etc.. As of now the only way to do that is to keep the ignition in the ON position with the potential of burning out the ignition points in the distributor. I was planning on installing a cut-off switch for the ignition coil but I would prefer something a bit more original. IF I have to do a bit of rewiring , so be it.
All gas powered Rabbits/ jettas at one point all had the mechanical points ignition. Does anyone remember if there was an accessory mode on the ignition switch for these or was it more of a hope and pray that the points would'nt burn out when you went to get the car inspected?
Tell them to leave it running for that test due to points ignition?

Easiest way, IMO.
I suppose you could add an ACC switch on the dash that has an ignition cutoff relay, but a hidden basic cutoff switch has the benefit of anti-theft.
I don't think any of the water cooled VWs have an acc mode. Key needs to be "on" or the wipers, headlights, etc won't run. Even if there was an acc, the things you need tested wouldn't work.
If you want a quick electronic ignition, install a Pertronics kit. I ran one of these kits 20 years ago.
