Any aftermarket cruse control suggestions - AAZ in Vanagon?
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:09:14 pm »
I figure while I'm running wires, a cruse control would be nice for long trips (hope to have many).
Does anyone have some recommendations?

The engine is a 1.9 AAZ, the vehicle is an 82 Vanagon.
Custom bracketry is no problem, just want something that works well.

Thanks,
Jim

factory one....... gas and diesel same... they run a sensor off the back of speedo...

nw the great...

83-98ish vw/audi cruise all same parts... different switch/speed sensors.. but wiring, pump and ball same...

i used to scrounge quantium ones as 95% had cruise.. most all 84+audi have them... but gol/jetta it option... same on vanagon..

you can build the harness... i built my 1st one back in 94.. then i figured out the supply of quantium.. you will have to extend 3 wires... best part.. has plug in it already.. :P

run 1 vac hose front to rear.. id use plastic fuel line stuff.. its the vacume air dump for berake and clutch..

i bet your speedo has the cut out for the sensor.. its simple 2 wire plug.. audi and vw till electronic clusters.. aka 2 wires... fit the hole and work...

the turn switch.. check price of new... else cut end off other one.. attatch to something..

but imo best way..

diesel vac ball bolts to the fuel pump.. for throttle..

I'd mount the pump in the rear and extend the wires to the front.  Electricity travels at the speed of light, adding volume to the vacuum would make it work harder/slower.

Thanks all.
Sometimes I think I just keep adding stuff to push out the eventual finish - odd.

I appreciate efficiency and I like to do anything that will save time in the long run, but cruise control is just as easy to add later as it is to add now.

I know a guy who put one of these;

...on his ancient Dodge diesel.  I helped him with the install....not too difficult and works like a charm.

yea.. but the stock system is simple to fix, install...

id run pump in back too.. but a small volume plastic tube to front switches is a "fail safe" more then use.. it dumps the vac incase the electrical parts of the switch fails... will it delay response yes.. but german electronics...

One of the great things about the system I linked to is that it doesn't use vacuum....it uses an electric actuator.

i think your pump springs to strong for the vac ball bbob..

i can piece together factory systems for 30-50$... out of junkyards pieces.. pick and pull 1/2 off day crazy crap they have.. bet  under 10.. wish i had those round here... quantium just has easiest to remove harness.. mk2 and audi they  built them in... quantiums seperate add in last min type of thing..

vanagon = more due to its more rair turn switch... so would cost more... but id cut up a other vag switch and get same look as aftermarket system...

If you can cobble something together, that's great.  The kit I linked to is a couple of hundred bucks.  It works, but it ain't cheap.

GW has one for 300+ but it does look like a simple install.
I installed one (like you linked) on an old 72 with a subie in it - worked well.

Thanks all for the pointers.
