Questions about my new (to me) 1990 1.6TD

Hey all! I'm still working on a better intro post,

But this issue has come about now, and I'm a bit unsure.

Anyway: Car smokes when the turbo spools - is this normal? Not "rolling coal" amounts, but visible. No smoke at idle. Normal?

Also, twice now, when gas gauge has been below 1/4 -- coming to a quick stop, then getting back on the gas: Throttle is unresponsive... For example, went from 4-3-2 and then let off brakes, went to get back on gas in 2nd, and nothing.

My take:

Smoke as described is normal.

Re power: I'd bypass (& remove) the water separator near the rear pass wheel, ditch the stock '91 fuel filter and get an early MK2 fuel filter. Put clear fuel lines on the inlet and outlet of the IP.

At that point, a better assessment can be made, if the problem still exists.
