With a recently rebuilt quantum 1.6td, the timing belt drifts toward the radiator side of the pulleys. Just after the cam gear (going clockwise), the belt is pushing to the outside by the time it circles the injection pump, then it wants to ride the intermediate shaft pulley outer edge (toward the radiator). What is the most likely cause for the belt drift to the radiator? The belt wants to ride the edge of the intermediate shaft pulley and it has shredded two belts. My 83 yr. old friend has done this and wanted me to come look at the problem. We looked at the injection pump pulley and it seems like the pulley is tilted toward the center of the engine, which could account for the drift. Anyone had this problem? We thought about shimming the inj pump at the the bolts to correct the tilt. What do you think?
Some have suggested to machine off the edges of the intermediate shaft pulley, but then what will prevent the belt from drifting further out?
