Pump is different.The snout is longer on the MKIII pump to clear the larger harmonic balancer and serpentine setup.
I have the MKII stuff you can use,but it look as if the high pressure line is different.The MKII uses a flare nut connection and the MKIII uses a banjo bolt.May be able to rig something up,or you may have to use a MKII PS line on the MKIII,as long as it will bolt up to the MKIII rack.They used two different PS racks in these cars,but I don't know if there is a difference in the high pressure input line fittings or not.
The best way is to probably swap in a manual rack,as the PS systems are trouble on VW's anyways.I can probably get you a bolt in manual rack (new rebuilt) for under $200.Just making sure it's a bolt in setup without changing tie rods or anything.
Then you can keep the belt setup simple,and just run an alternator.

thanks for all the info.
i would like to try using the mkII pump and mkII high pressure line.... as long as they will bolt to the mkIII rack. i guess i will need to determine if the fittings are the same for the input. you wouldn't be able to tell without pulling the line off the mkIII rack, correct?
if this car was just for me i would go to a manual rack in a heartbeat... however i'd like to keep the P/S in this one since it will hopefully be driven by my girlfriend quite frequently and i know the heavier steering is something that would deter her... want to make it as easy and comfortable for her to drive as i can within reason. no automatic transmissions :lol:

The rack end fitting should be the same,as the racks are the same between a MKII and an MKIII.
You would probably have to go new on that line,as they always rust and break when you take them off.
The PS line is around $100 new.

I'm not sure what year parts you are messing with but if your mkII power steering lines won't bolt up to the rack, you might want to check lines from the later mkIIs .
I think they have the same rack as the mkIIIs.
I swapped the rack in my '91, went to manual and somewhere around '90 they changed ... I think these later power steering racks will swap into an mkIII.

i'll use the mkII PS pump/bracket/line, feeding into a mkIII rack (which is the same as a later mkII rack anyway). makes sense. hope it fits up when it comes down to it.

Woohoo, there's a familiar sight. Last one of those I saw was tucked in the back of my '02 Jetta TDI (bloatware and parts b&tch, can you as for anymore?)

haha nice work cramming it into a jetta trunk. i was glad i had my rabbit hatch when we were loading it up :lol:
the 1.9 will end up in the '94 jetta i bought last week as a daily driver. it is a GL, turbo diesel... but sans motor/trans/exhaust... so now it will get its proper 1.9TD (the motor is actually from another '94 jetta GL TD, by chance
)
i have other plans for the rabbit, none of which are in stone... so for now my focus is on the bus and the '94 jetta. the rabbit won't be my daily anymore!!

Red gear is for 3.67 final drive, white (or "natural") gear is for 3.94.
If the gearbox is stock from a '90 TD it will have a 3.94 final drive, but your best bet is to reference the gearbox code to be sure.
