"In Chassis" Overhaul on a TDI
« on: May 14, 2013, 04:54:14 pm »
I just bought a 2000 TDI Jetta with a ton of miles on it and low compression. I am going to do "rings in the driveway" on it as soon as the parts get here. I have done at least 3 dozen of these on IDIs. Is there anything special about the TDI that I should know to look out for?

Isn't it a pain to pull the oil pan while in the car?  Much less break/torque the rod bolts back...

More importantly, when do you decide it need to be pulled and bored?  Good luck, I just know I'll pull mine and replace all the gaskets and what not since with that many miles its bound to leak...Not to mention you can check hoses for rot and the such...

The blocks are hard enough on these that the bores are usually pretty good unless the motor has been traumatized. This one is just tired. I have gotten over 100K on a ring and valve job on an IDI. I do not need it to be perfect. The car has 330K on it, after all. It is pretty nice, though. I would have guessed just over 100K from the condition. It was owned by an old lady that commuted 130 miles a day. Probably a petite woman at that from the condition of the seats.

FYI getting the pan off is no big deal and torquing the rods is even easier. You can't be a ham handed goon and expect it to last, but the technique I use keeps the crap out of the motor and has worked well on at least 50 IDIs. There is a sticky somewhere on this site that tells you how to do it.
