Turbo Bolts
« on: April 08, 2013, 09:15:15 am »
I've asked before but the request was buried in the thread with a bunch of other questions.

Looking for a minimum of one turbo mounting bolt 10-1.5 x 46 mm which is laying on the road somewhere.

Anyone have a spare or know where I can purchase a new set of four?

Thanks.
Jim

If you have to have the 12pt bolt called counterbore screw like stock I could see if I could get you 4. If you could use a socket head cap screw like I did I could send you some Thursday. Socket heads are what most people call Allen head bolts.

You can still get those bolts from VW but they are proud of them.  $10 each...

PM sent - thanks!

Thanks all for the pointers. Hopefully these aren't one time use bolts.
They have come loose on me several times. I'm hoping the bracket I built removes some of the stress.

If any are interested I could see how much those stock counterbore cap screws are in alloy or stainless. I think stainless is good around the heat and I can usually get one piece at a time from my stainless dist. where the alloys tend to be 100 piece min. I am GUESSING I could probably sell them for 1.00 a piece plus shipping. Let me know as I could find out if a few are interested.

Thanks theman53. Not a metallurgical guru but stainless is too soft IMHO. Your right about it's heat capabilities though - somewhat better than steel. The SHCS (socket head cap screws) have a small seat as well which would require a special HD washer.

I'm going to wait for the one offered (hopefully he can find it). If that fails, I'll get four new ones from VW. 40 bucks is expensive but cheap if it keeps my turbo tight ;D. With all the bracketry I've added, they will be nearly impossible to tighten once it's in the van.

I also found these - good ol Mc Master http://www.mcmaster.com/#92235A336 five for eight bucks and they include a captive washer. - while I was writing this, I ordered em. I'll have to let bbob203 know not to go looking in his can fpr the one he offered.

I appreciate the offer though.

I just used the stainless in my old 1.6. The 18-8 or 304 stainless is almost as hard as Grade 5. The higher number alloys are almost like Grade 8. I just used the off the shelf 18-8 and it worked for 40,000 miles no issues. I used a common split lock washer in the same stainless as well. You are not looking for tensile strength in holding the manifold, so they work just fine.
