IDI 1.6 TD Choke cable (GTD)
« on: March 22, 2013, 02:44:56 am »
I am in the midst of finally getting my project for re-assembly, and I am not sure if I really even need a choke for the car... If I do how would I mount it. I have heard that there is suppose to be a bracket in the interior where it mounts to the steering column? So you know this is a mk1 rabbit.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you happen to know where or how I can acquire said bracket that would be amazing!

Thanks for all your help!

its not a choke. depending on the year of the engine its either a timing advance for cold starting or timing advance+ idle bump wich helps it run better on startup when its cold so you don't have to hold the pedal down. What climate are you in?

You know the funniest thing is, I was actually calling it a Choke, because I didn't know what else to call it. I knew it went straight to the pump. Where was it going to be choking off the air? Thank you for correcting me on that one.

I am in the Northeast... New York State.

Most times people run them so statically advanced that the cold star doesn't actually do anything.. so it is your call. If you plan to run lower timing for whatever reason, then you will likely need it in the colder months just to help out with cold starts and to keep the engine happy.

Yes it goes straight to the backside of the pump where it manually and physically advances the timing internally to about 1750RPM. From there the internal pump pressures take over and it does its job normally.

What do plan on running for timing? I recommend starting between 0.90-0.95mm and then advancing if need be from there.

I actually don't know what timing I'm going to be running. I'm about to send my pump out to Giles.
I need to actually read up on timing to see what is normal. Does it matter what mods you have?

Some injection advance is helpful at low rpm when the engine is cold. Even with mods or advanced static timing, the KSB will have an effect.

The KSB lever pushes the timing piston, advancing the injection. When the IP rpm increases, internal pressure moves the piston further.

Early German mk1 dashes have a little metal tab that sits down beside the steering wheel that the cable runs through. Westy have the choke up on the dash bezel to the left of the cluster. Jettas have the handle in the mk2 location.
